About this mural:

When I was asked to write a little blurb about my mural in the Kelley High School cafeteria, I thought …. that was 52 years ago, how do I or can I remember that far back??

I’ve always loved a marching band, the drumline and the majorettes so when Mr. Johnson, art teacher, asked me if I’d be interested in painting a mural, I knew what my subject would be. My classmate, Sue Harriman, class of 66, would be the perfect model since she was the current drum majorette!  Mr. Johnson helped me sketch out the form on copy paper and then I transferred it to the pillar which was decided on as it fit the subject matter perfectly. I’m at a loss as to how long it took. I just know I’d spend my art class on a step ladder, painting, for quite some time.

Since then I dabbled in some oil painting. My late husband, Rick Church, class of 65, purchased all the supplies, etc. for a birthday gift. I just couldn’t get inspired for oil.  Calligraphy turned out to be my favorite artistic endeavor. I printed menus for a restaurant in Londonderry, NH and Bibles for the second-grade graduates at our church, First Parish, in East Derry, NH. I did several things for the church. There is a huge memorial donation book in the back of the church that several of us have written in. I sketched out a story telling how the old members of the church ran out of space for the parishioners so they cut apart the church around the middle, put huge logs for rollers under one end, hitched it to a team of oxen and pulled the building several feet apart! After they repaired the opening, they had plenty of room for all. If you’re ever in East Derry, NH, please look up the church and you’ll see all these things.  - Barb (Rude) Church - April, 2018
