About this mural:

My mural portrays a chess game in which the two people playing are the same person. As I recall my idea was that of a person confronting himself symbolically through playing chess. The image is open to interpretation but one take is of empirical thinking pitted against intuitive thought while another is the intellect confronting creativity. I was especially pleased and grateful about the location I was given for the mural along with the results. Two friends, Gene Wolfe and Ken Reed, posed for the two individuals (in a black and white photograph). I created a grid on piece of paper where I completed the initial sketch in pastels. I then created the same grid large scale on the wall and used that to map the image from the paper. - Joe Walentiny - February, 2019
