About this mural:

  • Title:  The Bass Clarinet
  • Theme:  Practice

Our senior year in high school, Sue and I had an independent study class in painting. We both wanted to do a mural together but the challenge was to find a subject to paint. We met with Mr. Steve Meyer who was our instructor and drew up this idea. He suggested we paint something that would be meaningful for both of us. We knew the location of the mural would be in front of the band room.

Sue played the Bass Clarinet in the band and it is such a unique instrument that we decided to use it as our subject. The instrument is quite large and it actually sits on the floor.
Sue and I would enter music competitions together in school. She would play a solo piece and I would play the piano for her. One year she played on a normal size clarinet, but the Bass Clarinet was really amazing. The tone is rich, deep, and truly like the adult clarinet. Sitting in a practice room with this huge instrument monopolizing all of the other noise is a powerful experience.

We wanted to capture a moment in time in a practice room. The papers are scattered because it was always hard to manage papers on the little music stands. We simply painted a room with the clarinet that has been set aside after a long rehearsal. Maybe we went outside since it looks like a beautiful day out of that window. - Holly (Cone) Hartzell – May, 2018
